Christian Foundation For the Blind-India

Braille Printing Press Project

The C.F.B.I. Braille Press stands as the cornerstone of the Association’s mission. Since its inception in 1978, the Press has been dedicated to printing Braille materials—educational, social, spiritual, and recreational—and distributing them to over 500+ institutions, serving more than 25,000 readers across India and overseas. At a time when blind individuals in India had access only to occasional English magazines from abroad, the establishment of the Press marked a significant milestone—enabling readers to enjoy literature in their own languages.

To date, the Press has published over 1,500 titles spanning a wide range of subjects for the blind in 18 Indian languages. In 1998, with support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, the Press upgraded its capabilities with an advanced computerized Braille printing unit.

The Press continues Supported by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment Government of India, the Press recognized the diverse needs of blind students and has produced Braille materials for schools and colleges, including guidebooks for classes 10 to 12, General knowledge, Dictionaries, Thirukkural, Study notes, Maps, and diagrams. All these resources are printed and distributed free of charge to schools for the blind.

Beyond books, the Press publishes periodicals and journals on various topics to educate and inspire Braille readers. Every year, Braille calendars are printed and distributed free of cost to over 6,000 blind individuals and institutions. Through its literature outreach programs, the organisation continuously strives to enrich the lives and spirits of blind individuals throughout India, making the Braille Press an essential pillar of the Foundation’s mission.

In keeping with its commitment to furthering education, the organization collaborates with the State Resource Centre of the Tamil Nadu government to deliver adult literacy programs for the visually challenged, providing primer-level educational materials.

Since 2008, the Braille Press has actively participated in printing election materials in Braille for the Election Commission of India. For the first time in India, Voter ID (EPIC) cards were printed for visually challenged voters in Tamil Nadu. Materials such as booth slips and Braille ballot sheets are regularly produced at our press for every Assembly and State Election.

In partnership with the Bible Society of India for over 38 years, the Braille Press also prints and distributes Braille scripture portions and Braille calendars in 18 Indian languages.

In recognition of its substantial contribution to Braille literacy in India, the C.F.B.I. Braille Press has been honoured with several state and national awards:
• Excellence of Services Award from the Lioness Council International District 324–A1 (February 2006).
• National Award for Excellence in Braille Literature Production and Distribution 2005 from the All India Confederation of the Blind, New Delhi (January 2006).
• Best Employer National Award for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities 2006 from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
• Best Braille Press 2015 from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
These honours have encouraged us to expand our efforts—reaching more underprivileged individuals and empowering them to achieve new visions and aspirations within society.
